The data format
Landmarks (nodes)
| Field | Values | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
id | Number | The landmark's number, in the order it was researched, not by year. |
title | Text | Full descriptive title. |
oneline | Text | One plain sentence: what happened and why it matters. |
years | [start, end] | The same year twice for a single-year event. |
kind | discovery · trial · tool · model · infrastructure · preclinical | What sort of landmark it is. |
branch | [lane, tags…] | The first is the lane it is drawn in; the rest are tags. All come from branches.yaml. |
outcome | advanced · open · superseded · dead-end · pending | Where it stands now. |
expected | YYYY-MM | Required for pending: when the result is expected. |
phase | 1 · 1/2 · 2 · 2/3 · 3 … | Trials only, when known. |
n | Number | People enrolled, when known. |
unverified | Number | Open points in the file's "Not yet verified" line, counted at semicolons. |
file | Text | The landmark's Markdown file in landmarks/. |
Links (edges)
| Field | Values | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
source | Number | The upstream landmark. |
target | Number | The landmark that builds on it. |
rel | builds-on · tests · uses · supersedes · responds-to · challenges | How they are linked. |
inferred | true · false | True when the link is not described in the target's text. |
What is in scope
The map tracks every step toward slowing, stopping or reversing Parkinson's, and the discoveries that explain what drives it. Treatments that only ease symptoms, and early diagnosis, are left out unless other work builds on them.
It aims for coverage, not a count: every disease-modifying trial that reached Phase 2 or later, notable Phase 1 trials, every gene shown to cause Parkinson's, the discoveries that opened or turned each lane, and the tools and resources later work depends on. Replications and small safety studies of the same drug are left out unless they add a link, a dead end or a change of status.
How facts are sourced
Facts are checked against publisher pages, DOIs, university repositories, trial registries, sponsor releases and Alzforum. Encyclopaedias are used only to find leads. Funding and company facts come from funder reports, company releases and filings, which never count as sources for scientific results.
When a detail cannot be confirmed, the landmark lists it under "Not yet verified". Gaps are never filled from memory. Every landmark carries the date it was last checked.
How the data is checked
A validation script checks every landmark's frontmatter against the rules above and writes graph.json. It fails on unknown lanes, missing expected dates for pending results, links that point forward in time, and outcomes that disagree with the file's header.
The website build then checks that every number on a public page comes from a landmark, that pending results are not overdue, and that plain-English summaries were written after the facts they describe were last checked.
